Washing my hands of the Hero Boards

It seems these days all I do is argue with folk there - especially the ones, who appear to be on the Hero System board out of spite because they actually prefer other roleplaying systems.

That tied with the fact that I keep having my nose rubbed into the facts that not only is it a privately owned board (and therefore any of my contributions are not to the community of roleplayers as a whole) but that the webmaster of the board is a sociopathic wanker.

Generally the moderators are good, and some of the posters are not childish - but it's the rare few, such as Ragitsu, who highlight how much I've been wasting my time on their.

7 years and 6000 posts on a board for a roleplaying system that, while I like the mechanics of, I've only ever GMed 3 times and played once. Not only that, but NO ONE I KNOW actually plays it.

Ideally I want to remove everything I've ever posted from the board - all 6000 posts.

Not really out of spite, but because I don't want to have any incentive to ever go to the boards again. That I have nothing invested in it and will no longer feel any propriety ownership or that I deserve any amount of respect there.

Sadly, there is no easy way to do this. Nor am I able to delete my account, so I'll have to talk to the moderators about it.

Hooray! It's good not to engage with people who don't respect your world view. There certainly seems to be a freakish number of militant religious types on that board.

And militant D&D players who get offended when you even hint that you don't like the system, and have knowledge of other systems.

Apparently knowing of more than 2 RPGs means you are a "System Elitist"

I suspect that bagging out any particular system will see the bagger marked as a "system elitist" by some fans of that system.

I'm curious that you want to remove your past presence from those boards. Can't you just wash your hands of it and walk away?

It feels I'm still there if I still have contributions there.

It's a bit like a blog in the way that you hope people comment on things.

While I have things there, I may one day go back there.

Plus it gives me closure.

Quotes saved from the boards-

Old School is not wondering about what a monster does in a dungeon when the PCs aren't around.
Scientology is as much a religion as Nigeria is full of entrepreneurs.
Subcutaneous: Pertaining to the Hello Kitty U-Boat navy.
Mythological: The ongoing false stereotype that women are less intelligent than men.

Ah the drama/crap of forums. I admin a forum for a large record label, where no one that posts there actually likes any of the music the label releases these days. New posters that joined because they found it due to new releases are just mocked, so I had to make a specific forum just for the new releases.

There's only so much deleting and moving I can do.

Hopefully the mods will be nice and delete you and your posts, though usually they are hesitant to due to "ruining" running threads. I've even offered to pay for this before.

I haven't posted there since I moved to Schenectady, I don't think. Maybe a little before then. I sometimes wonder if I'm missing out on anything.

Hunh.

A bit. But 7 years, 6000 posts for something I've played four times in my life!

Plus I seemed to be spending hours every day there - it's an addiction I need to kick.

Yeah. I like the system and all, but its complexity is a turnoff for people. When I roleplay, I want to play with other people who understand the rules.

I was spending something like 4 hours a day on there for a while. It was pretty bad.

Yep, ditto.

I'm thinking the next thing I run will probably be the rules light new rules for Doctor Who. It fits my style quite well.

Even when I ran Hero, I dumped a lot of the rules as being unnecessarily granular.

Hmm, sadly I checked again, thinking to delete more posts if I wasn't purged.

Gosh - what did I find? All the posts have been undeleted (because as a user I only have the power to soft delete) and my own private message from Simon. I can't be bothered even reading it.

Ugh. Y'know, that is just so representative of the Hero Games Board experience, right there . . .

Rules-light Systems

You might enjoy FATE / Spirit of the Century. It's decent enough in play, and being the new hotness, you might be more likely to get a game going now and then.

Re: Rules-light Systems

I have doubts that there will be any roleplaying of any sort occurring in the future in which I am a GM. Everyone has moved on and/or lacks incentive to learn anything new.

As a mod of the forums in question, I'm just kind of baffled at the need to delete every contribution you've ever made to the boards. People do read back posts, and it's just kind of weird to find holes in the conversation for reasons unrelated to that conversation. I mean, the board tools let you do it, and if you want to vandalize all your previous contributions, knock yourself out... but wouldn't it just be easier to delete the forums from your bookmarks and walk away?

I totally get deciding that you're just not into it anymore and it's time to spend your time on other things. And I certainly get walking away from something that's just raising your blood pressure (I learned the hard way myself that calling out sexism on the boards wasn't getting through to anybody and the responses just make me more stressed.) Making a public fuss about retconning yourself seems like actually a less clean break, because you're having to stick around and wallow in the decision.

If my stuff isn't there, then I will never want to go back - it's a cathartic thing.

I don't want to have to delete stuff myself, but will if I have to.

7 years is a lot of emotional attachement

On a side note, it's begining to look almost exactly like a midlife crisis on my part just because of a birthday I have looming - so its probably that mixed with one too many insults and a realisation that I do not want to provide resources on a PRIVATELY owned board that is run by a sociopathic wanker who I absolutely hate and would (if it was in my power) get fired from the company if I knew of any means to do so.

Ideally, when I first got the infractions from Simon for you know, not being a sociopath that worships Simon as a God - that was when I should have left the board for good.

So if you want, just delete all my posts up until Simon was a dick.
